Swimming: Region II Meet

WARRENTON- Sherando sophomore Kelsey Dingman took first place in the 50-yard freestyle at the Region II meet Saturday at the Warrenton Aquatic Center.
Dingman won with a time of 25.4 seconds, edging out James Wood senior Alex Lew for the title. Dingman also posted another state-qualifying time by taking fourth in the 100 free (57.23).
In the girls' meet, James Wood took seventh with 30 points, Sherando was 10th with 20, Handley was 11th with 19 and Millbrook was 17th with 2.
In the boys' meet, Millbrook was 10th with 21 points, Handley was 13th with 15 points, and Sherando and James Wood did not score.
The top six individuals and top three relays in each event - as well as those who have previously recorded state times - qualified for the Group AA/A state meet, which takes place Thursday through Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Those who achieved state times Saturday were:
James Wood girls - Lew (second in the 50 free, 25.58 seconds; fifth in the 100 free, 57.40); Sara Fergus (fourth in the 500 free, 5:34.67, seventh in the 100 butterfly, 1:03.75); Kaye Whitacre (seventh in the 100 breaststroke, 1:10.89); the foursome of McKenzie McNemar, Whitacre, Fergus and Lew in the 200 medley relay (ninth, 2:00.27) and 200 free relay (fourth, 1:47.11).
Handley girls - Sparkle Kitchin (sixth in the 100 free, 57.42, seventh in the 200 free, 2:03.99); Elizabeth Grove (fourth in the 200 individual medley, 2:16.39, fourth in the 100 back, 1:04.74).
Handley boys - Taylor Watts (third in the 100 free, 50.70, fifth in the 50 free, 23.35); the team of Jarett Cestaro, Daniel Flax, Samuel Stearns and Watts (seventh in the 400 free relay, 3:35.39).
Millbrook boys - Thomas Northrup (third in the 100 fly, 56.42, eighth in the 100 breast, 1:05.59); Michael Span (fourth in the 100 back, 58.41); Nick Patton (fourth in the 100 breast, 1:04.53); the team of Joe Patterson, Patton, Northrup, and Span in the 200 medley relay (eighth, 1:47.84); and the team of Span, Patterson, Northrup and Mark Graham in the 200 free relay (eighth, 1:35.74).
