Babington Takes 3rd At State Meet

CHRISTIANSBURG — James Wood junior Conor Babington placed third in the 100-yard butterfly to highlight local performances Saturday at the Group 4A state swim meet at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
Babington placed third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.07 seconds, and Babington also placed eighth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.66.
Sherando senior Kelsey Dingman was the top area girls’ finisher, earning fourth-place times in both the 50 free (25.09) and 100 free (55.87).
Dingman also helped the 200 free relay team that included Laura Ferguson, Brianna English and Brenna Sharp tie for fifth in 1:46.07, and the same foursome placed seventh in the 200 medley relay in 1:59.16. Sherando’s boys were led by James Williams (fifth in the 200 free in 1:50.71), its 200 free relay team of Williams, Tommy McVey, Ethan Medrano and Mark Restrepo (sixth in 1:35.11) and its 400 free relay team of Restrepo, Medrano, Williams and Daniel Milburn (eighth in 3:29.04).
Handley’s Liz Grove took fifth in both the 200 individual medley (2:14.93) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.47).
James Wood’s Brian Baker placed fourth in the 200 free in 1:48.62 and seventh in the 100 free (50.38).
Millbrook’s Lindsay Fairbanks placed seventh in the 100 free (57.34) and Millbrook’s boys 400 free relay team of Hunter Doherty, Danny Hollingsworth, Alex Morrow and Chris Patton was sixth in 3:28.64.
In the team standings, Grafton won the boys’ meet with 295 points, Tabb was second with 224, Sherando was eighth with 77, James Wood was 11th with 54, and Millbrook tied for 20th with 33.
In the girls’ meet, Jamestown was first with 354 points, Grafton was second with 209, Sherando was ninth with 87, Handley was 13th with 28, Millbrook was 14th with 27, and James Wood was 19th with 9.
