Sherando Swim Team Sweeps Black & Blue Invitational

WINCHESTER — The Sherando boys’ and girls’ swimming teams were each victorious in the seven-school Black & Blue Invitational held at Jim Barnett Park’s War Memorial Building pool Saturday morning.
The Sherando boys scored 332 points, 188 more than co-runners-up James Wood (154) and Harrisonburg (154). The Warriors edged the Colonels for the girls’ title with 248.5 points to James Wood’s 233.
The Sherando boys had six people make the all-meet team, including the top five individual point-scorers. Ethan Medrano (50-meter freestyle in 26.41 seconds and 100 free in 1:00.06) and Daniel Milburn (200 free in 2:09.73 and 400 free in 4:31.15) each won two individual events and swam on the winning 200 medley relay (2:01.89) and 400 free relay (4:04.12) to tie for first with 42 points.
Hunter Mayo (first in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.62, second in the 200 IM in 2:42.16) and David Restrepo (first in the 100 butterfly in 1:07.25, second in the 50 free in 26.65) also swam on the 200 and 400 free relays.
The Warriors were also led by Jeremy Linaburg (first in the 200 IM in 2:41.39, fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:19.56) and Jacob Adams (third in the 50 free in 27.40, fourth in the 100 free in 1:06.61). Adams was joined on the winning 200 free relay team (1:55.43) by Cameron Gregory, Gregory Crouch and Bryson Waits.
Dean Ludwig made the all-meet team for the James Wood boys, placing second in the 100 backstroke (1:13.53) and fifth in the 100 fly (1:16.77). He also swam on the second-place 200 free relay team (1:55.54).
The Sherando girls had three people make the all-meet team. Sarah Lauer (all-meet) placed first in the 200 free (2:32.63), second in the 400 free (5:28.68) and swam on the winning 400 free relay team (4:52.52) with Camryn Ubert (all-meet, third in the 100 back in 1:24.71 and sixth in the 100 free in 1:12.76), Stella Mae Williams (all-meet, fourth in the 200 free in 2:45.88 and fifth in the 100 back in 1:28.40) and Kelsie Utz. Also for Sherando, Abigail Sears tied for first in the 100 breaststroke (1:26.88).
James Wood’s Zoe Schopick tied for high-point honors on the girls’ side with St. Maria Goretti’s Katie Manning (39 points each). Schopick won the 200 IM (2:45.66) and the 100 fly (1:12.56). She also swam on the second-place 200 medley relay team (2:23.24) and 200 free relay team (2:04.46) with fellow all-meet performers Lydia Sunderlin (second in the 50 free in 30.64 and 100 free in 1:07.21) and Erin Jackson (second in the 100 backstroke in 1:18.18 and fourth in the 50 free in 31.78).
On Friday, the James Wood girls went 4-0 at a meet at Westover Park in Harrisonburg, and the Colonel boys went 3-1.
The girls beat Amherst County 131-36, Fluvanna County 101-68, Harrisonburg 97-70 and Waynesboro 121-42. Schopick won the 200-yard IM (2:33.06) and 100 butterfly (1:05.13), Lydia Sunderlin won the 100 free (1:01.05) and took second in the 50 free (27.65) and Jackson won the 100 backstroke (1:08.28). The 200 free relay team of Katie Sunderlin, Taylin Crosen, Jackson and Lydia Sunderlin won in 1:52.94 and the 400 free relay team, which featured the Sunderlins, Hannah Cavanagh and Schopick won in 4:16.62.
Also for the Colonels, Katie Sunderlin placed second in the 100 free (1:02.47) and Taylin Crosin placed third in the 100 fly (1:14.78).
The boys beat Fluvanna County 89-80, Amherst County 118-23 and Waynesboro 122-24, and lost to Harrisonburg 91-80. Brian Hua won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.87 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.62, David Dorsey won the 200 free in 2:11.00 and took second in the 500 free (6:14.40), Sam McCarthy won the 500 free (6:09.78), Ludwig took second in the 100 backstoke (1:07.25), Keeyan McDonald took third in the 200 free (2:27.15), Daniel Woodrum took third in the 100 free (1:00.00).
