WINCHESTER — Clarke County won 16 of the 22 races Thursday to sweep James Wood in a dual swimming meet at the Jim Barnett Park pool.

Led by strong performances by Maeve Lyman, Makenzie Reshetar and Sophia Deem, the Eagles outpointed the Colonels 116-53 in the girls’ competition. Eamon Juday, Derek Sprincis and Ryan Nesslerodt led the Clarke County boys to an 87-57 triumph.

“I’m really happy with the way our swimmers performed this evening,” Clarke County coach Carol Marshall said. “They swam a lot better than they did last week against Sherando. We were much more positive coming into the meet. We had some really strong performances tonight, and our kids are really coming on.”

While the Colonels weren’t able to win many individual races against the powerful Eagles teams, two Wood swimmers did well. Brian Hua won both the 200-meter individual medley (2:34.05), and the 100 breaststroke (1:19.40).

“I felt pretty good in all of my races,” Hua said. “I feel like I’m improving a lot. Our team is also improving a lot. We haven’t practiced in a while so I think tonight was about the best that we could do.”

The Colonels’ Kimberly Warnagiris finished first in the 50 freestyle (28.65), and the 100 butterfly (1:09.41). Both were state qualifying times.

“I’ve been working hard in practice and I thought it paid off tonight,” Warnagiris said. “It was great to get those two state qualifying times, too. Although we weren’t able to win the meet, almost all of our swimmers dropped their time and at this point in the season that’s what it is all about.”

The meet, however, was dominated by Clarke County. Lyman was the top performer for the Eagles’ girls finishing first in the 100 freestyle (1:07.90) and 100 breaststroke (1:28.03). She also swam a leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay (2:11.69) with teammates Reshetar, Emily David, and Anne Herndon.

Reshetar captured the 200 freestyle (2:42.59) and was second in the 100 free (1:13.51). Deem won the 100 backstroke (1:18.70) and was second in the 100 butterfly (1:20.94). She also swam a leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay (5:02.99) with Camryn Reshetar, Stephanie Miller and David. Tess Whalen won the 200 individual medley for the Eagles (3:00.12). Miller was first in the 400 freestyle (5:24.28).

“I thought I did really well,” Reshetar said. “We also did well as a team.”

Juday was part of four wins for the Clarke County boys. Individually, he was first in the 50 freestyle (27.34) and 400 freestyle (5:02.73). He swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay (2:08.22) with Sprincis, Mateo Smith and Nesslerodt and joined Nesslerodt, Cooper Lowell and Kevin Whalen on the 400 freestyle (4:16.410).

Sprincis captured the 100 butterfly (1:11.28) and 100 backstroke (1:09.64). Nesslerodt won the 100 freestyle (59.88).

James Wood’s David Dorsey triumphed in the 200 freestyle (2:29.00).

“I thought the kids did great,” Colonels coach Alan Cavanagh said. “Clarke County has a really strong team. I was proud of how our kids swam.”
