Swimming: James Wood places third in Region 4D
CHRISTIANSBURG — Led by double individual winner Joseph Warnagiris, James Wood placed third to lead local teams at the Region 4D meet on Tuesday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
The Colonels scored 73 points. Blacksburg led 11 scoring teams with 176 points and Jefferson Forest was second with 149. Millbrook was sixth with 34 points and Handley and Sherando did not score.
The Bruins also won the girls' meet, scoring 164 points to win by 16 points over runner-up Jefferson Forest (148). Millbrook was fourth (46), Sherando placed fifth (39), James Wood took eighth (33) and Handley finished 10th (9) out of 12 scoring teams.
A junior, Warnagiris won the 200-yard individual medley by 11.19 seconds in 1:54.31 and the 100 backstroke by 4.47 seconds in 50.73. Sherando senior Madelynn Twigg captured the 100 backstroke by 3.19 seconds in 1:00.57.
The top five finishers in each individual event and top four finishers in each relay event, as well as those with qualifying times, advanced to the Class 4 state meet on Feb. 16 at SwimRVA in Richmond.

Millbrook boys: Nathan Truong, third in 200 IM, 2:05.67; Zack Carter, fourth in 100 fly, 55.54; Wyatt Post, fifth in 100 fly, 55.67.
Millbrook girls: Riley Pillo, second in 200 IM, 2:17.21, and 100 fly, 1:00.89; Kiera Webster, third in 100 fly, 1:01.05, and fourth in 50 free, 25.98; 400 free relay (Ansley Pendleton, Pillo, Lauren Dennard, Webster), fourth in 4:01.09.
Sherando girls: Madelynn Twigg, second in 100 free, 54.78; 200 medley relay (Twigg, Addy Wallin, Reese Luong, Ellie Luong), fourth in 2:00.66; Wallin, 100 breast, fifth in 100 breast, 1:17.41.
James Wood girls: Kallie Gyurisin, fifth in 200 IM, 2:28.76.
Handley girls: Shane Kim, fourth in 100 free, 57.40, fifth in 200 free, 2:05.37.
