Wood's Black to wrestle at Dubuque

WINCHESTER — Two-time state champion Aaron Black, a James Wood graduate, will continue his wrestling career at the University of Dubuque in Iowa.

Dubuque is an NCAA Division III school that competes in the Iowa Conference. The Spartans are coached by Jon McGovern, who has led the Spartans to four top-20 finishes, including two-top 15 performances, at the NCAA Championships in his 14 years as head coach. He has also coached seven All-Americans.

As a senior, Black wrestled at 120 pounds and won his second Group 4A state championship with a 33-1 record. Black suffered his only loss of the year in the 4A West Region final to Fauquier’s Kyle Budd by a 1-0 score, but Black avenged that defeat by scoring a reversal with 26 seconds left to beat Budd 2-1 in the state final.

Black won the first state title of his career as a freshman at 106 pounds. He took second at the state tournament at 113 pounds in both his sophomore and junior years.

Black finished with a career record of 181-13 to rank third on James Wood’s all-time win list, according to head coach Cory Crenshaw. He was a four-time conference champion and two-time region champion.
