State Wrestling - Day 1

Clarke County advanced three-time state champion Bryan Wallace as well as Timmy Stokes and William Heath to today’s Class 2 state finals at the Salem Civic Center, and Millbrook senior 285-pounder Tavon Blowe advanced to today’s state finals in Class 4 at Churchland High School in Portsmouth during tournament action on Friday.

Action begins in Salem with semifinal consolations at 9 a.m. and championship finals at 3 p.m. Action begins today at Churchland at 10 a.m. with the consolation semifinals and concludes at 3:30 p.m. with the championship finals.

Wallace (285 pounds, 51-1 record) will try to win his fourth different weight class title in four years. He will wrestle Maxx Philpott of Glenvar. Fellow seniors Stokes (152 pounds, 27-4, finals opponent Mathew Teasley of Nandua) and Heath (160, 45-2, finals opponent Shane Shannon of King William) will each be going for their first state titles. Heath was also a state finalist at 160 pounds last year.

In the Class 2 standings, Clarke County (five of six state qualifiers still alive in the tournament) is second with 83 points, but Poquoson has 165 points.

Millbrook’s Blowe (50-1) will attempt to win his first career state title after taking second at 285 pounds last year. Blowe will wrestle Julian Sams of Liberty in the state final. Blowe has defeated Sams in the Class 4 Northwestern District and Region 4C finals this postseason.

In the Class 4 standings, Millbrook (two of four state qualifiers still alive) is 14th with 35 points, Sherando (two of five still alive) is 15th with 28 points and James Wood (two of five still alive) is 23rd with 19 points. Handley’s one qualifier Web Bentley (138 pounds) is still alive in the tournament. His 11 points have the Judges in 30th place. Fauquier is in first with 150 points and Eastern View is second with 147.

In Class 2, Clarke’s Wallace had a first round bye, defeated Grayson County’s Mathew Bourne by fall in 1:08 in the quarterfinals and Poquoson’s Dalton Jones by fall in 49 seconds in the semifinals.

Clarke’s Heath had a first round bye, defeated Quadarius Baker of Appomattox by fall (2:25) in the quarterfinals and Derrick Young of Tazewell 19-5 in the semis.

Clarke’s Stokes had a first round bye, defeated Poquoson’s Cordell Johnson 11-2 in the quarterfinals and Will Rowan of Union 8-3 in the semis.

Clarke’s Jack Smith (120 pounds) won by fall over Josh Baldwin of Appomattox in 44 seconds in the first round, lost to Cole McCormick of Poquoson 19-6 in the quarterfinals, won his second round consolation by major decision (15-6) over Hunter Martin of Lebanon and won his third round consolation by fall over Asher Coffey of Stuarts Draft.

At 220, Clarke’s Pete McLean won by decision (5-1) in the first round over Joe Castiglia of Nandua, lost to Luke Martin of Richlands by sudden victory (3-1) in the quarterfinal, won his second round consolation by fall in 2:37 over Elijah Lee of Marion Senior and won his third round consolation ove Joshua Pinkard of Martinsville 6-3.

Emmett Maiberger (145) went 0-2 and has been eliminated.

In Class 4, Millbrook’s Blowe won by fall over Blacksburg’s Shane Mitcham in the first round (2:58), defeated Deep Creek’s Terrell Bell 2-1 in the quarterfinals and beat Louisa’s Cameron Hornsby by fall in the semifinals in 41 seconds.

Millbrook’s Jonathan Ochoa (113) won by decision (8-7) over Kameron Johnson of King George in the first round, defeated Grant Brammer of Liberty Christian 4-1 in the quarterfinals and lost in the semifinals to Eastern View’s Dillon Werth by technical fall (16-1 in 4:23).

Millbrook’s Lukas Guerrero (138) lost by fall in 3:05 to Kolby Allred of Great Bridge (first round), beat Elijah Caviness of Carroll County 8-4 (consolation first round), beat Bryan Conteras of Liberty with a 5-3 sudden victory (second round consolations) and was eliminated with a 4-3 loss to Amherst’s Hayden Berkey (third round consolations).

Millbrook’s Daniel VanAmburg (145) lost by fall in 1:18 to Jesse Alvarado of Great Bridge in the first round, defeated Kaine Morris of Jefferson Forest (10-8 sudden victory, first round consolations), won by forfeit over Robert Creamer of Dominion (second round of consolations) and was eliminated by Drew Shurina of Eastern View 10-5 (third round consolations).

James Wood’s Aaron Curd (152) defeated Lake Taylor’s Jahquan Christopher by fall in the first round (1:39), Powhatan’s Colby Cheatham by decision in the quarterfinals (10-6) and lost to Eastern View’s John Shaffer 11-8 in the semifinals.

James Wood’s Vince Caruso (113 pounds) lost by fall in the first round to Joseph McMillan of Powhatan (3:18) and won his first round consolation against Jefferson’s Ian Evans by fall (4:40). He was eliminated with a 10-2 major decision loss to Deep Creek’s Gavin Houk in the second round of consolations.

James Wood’s Josh Arce (120 pounds) lost to Hanover’s Will Gaugler 7-0 in the first round and won his first round consolation by sudden victory (9-8) over Liberty Christian’s Kaden Unroe. He was eliminated with a 9-4 loss to Andrew Nazarro of Eastern View in the second round of consolations.

James Wood’s Luke Roy (195 pounds) lost his first round match by fall to Amherst County’s D.J. Perry (0:50), won his first round consolation 5-2 over Patrick Henry-Ashland’s Chad Berger, defeated Brendan Dean of King George 8-3 in the second round consolations and beat Hanover’s Michael Wilcox 11-5 in the third round consolations.

James Wood’s Joey Vitola went 0-2 at 138 pounds and has been eliminated.

Sherando’s Timmy Dieter (132) defeated Lafayette’s Caleb Troup by fall (1:55) in the first round, lost to Powhatan’s Collin Gerardi by fall (4:39) in the quarterfinals, defeated Noah Losievsky (Loudoun Valley) 10-4 in the second round of consolations and beat Ben Smith (Blacksburg) by fall in 3:44 in the third round of consolations.

Sherando’s Zack Kales (220 pounds) won 5-2 over Salem’s Tae Hale in the first round, lost 16-5 to King’s Fork’s Dennis Whitehead in the quarterfinals, beat Josh Avery (Liberty Christian) by fall in 2:36 in the second round of consolations and beat Carter Shipp of Jefferson Forest 4-2 (third round of consolations).

Sherando’s Heath Rudolph (126) lost 7-2 in the first round to Louisa’s Mason Morris, defeated Blacksburg’s Christian Vance by fall (0:50) in the consolation first round, and was eliminated with a loss by fall to JJ Laird of Eastern View in 1:29 in the second round of consolations.

Sherando’s Tucker Anderson (160) defeated Owen Lalley of Great Bridge 8-5 in the first round, lost to Powhatan’s Sam Tomlinson by tech fall (15-0 in 2:32) in the quarterfinals and was eliminated with a 2-1 loss to Dominique McNair of Lake Taylor in the second round of consolations.

Sherando’s Zach McCarty (182) lost 22-8 to Josh Davidson of Liberty Christian in the first round, defeated King’s Fork’s Leo Wethington in 1:49 in the first round of consolations and was eliminated by Zack David of Loudoun Valley by fall 2:29 in the second round of consolations.

Handley’s Web Bentley (138 pounds) defeated Deep Creek’s Trevor Woolbright by fall in the first round (1:18) and King George’s Cody Murgas by fall in the quarterfinals (1:05). He lost by a 15-8 decision to Great Bridge’s Kolby Allred in the semifinals.
