Four still have shots at Class 4 wrestling titles

LEESBURG — Just four area wrestlers still have a shot at state titles after the quarterfinal round of the VHSL Class 4 Wrestling Championship at Riverside High School on Friday.

Sherando’s Timmy Dieter (132 pounds) and Heath Rudolph (145) along with Handley’s Web Bentley (138) and Millbrook’s Daniel Flores (220) were the only locals to win a pair of matches and advance to today’s semifinals, which start at 10 a.m. at Robinson High School in Fairfax.

Dieter opened by pinning Hanover’s Will Gaugler at 1:51 of the first period. He followed that up with a dominating 9-3 decision over Salem’s Alex Royston.

Rudolph took his first match as Huguenot’s D’Andre Sydnor defaulted with an injury at 3:34 in the second period. Rudolph then won a wild 14-12 decision over Amherst’s Samari Brogdon in the quarterfinals.

Bentley’s first match was his toughest as he pulled out a 10-6 decision over Eastern View’s Cameron Sheads. Bentley followed with a pin of Liberty Christian’s Connor McCann in just 40 seconds.

Flores cruised into the semifinals with a pair of falls. He decked Warhill’s Trysten Welch in 4:36 and pinned Carroll County’s Cameron Willis in 3:09.

Three other wrestlers out of the 20 are in the consolation bracket and are guaranteed of making all-state by placing in the top six — Millbrook's Jonathan Ochoa (113 pounds), Handley's Mac Gordon (126 pounds) and James Wood's Joey Vitola (152).
