Northwestern District Wrestling Tournament

WARRENTON — Anthony Lucchiani (138 pounds) and Zachary Hayes (144) each won their weight classes to lead Sherando to second place at the Northwestern District wrestling tournament on Friday at Fauquier High School.

The Warriors scored 161.5 points to finish only behind Skyline (197.5) in the 11-school tournament. Led by 285-pound champion Ezra Doyle-Naegeli, Millbrook placed sixth with 114.5 points. James Wood was seventh (108) and Handley finished ninth (66), led by the effort of 175-pound champion Thomas Thorpe. Each of the four local champions went 5-0.

Wrestlers were divided into pools for the opening round of competition. Wrestlers then finished the tournament with one or two placement matches based on how high they finished in the opening round of pool competition.

Lucchiani won his first four matches by fall and defeated Handley's Hayden Thompson by technical fall 19-4 in four minutes and 20 seconds in what turned out to be the championship match at 138. Hayes won his three pool matches by fall, won his first championship round match by decision, then defeated Skyline's Cody Salomon 6-1 for the title at 144.

Others who placed in the top six for the Warriors were Carter Straight (4-1, second at 126, pinned by Brentsville's Evan Sanati for the championship); Lucas Bauer (3-2, third at 113); Jake Dann (3-2, third at 165); Ben Taylor (3-2, third at 175); Kaden Hurst (third at 215); Kaden Frock (3-1, fourth at 106); Judson Dean (fourth at 190); Zane Jenkins (3-2, fifth at 157); and Nicholas McDaniel (sixth at 132).

Millbrook's Doyle-Naegeli won three of his first four matches by fall, and the other came via ultimate tiebreaker. In the championship match, he beat Fauquier's Brian Bland 8-4.

Others who placed in the top six for the Pioneers were William Potter (4-1, second at 175, lost 9-4 to Thorpe for the championship); Alex Stubblefield (4-1, third at 132); Julian Cusick (3-2, third at 150); Tyler Kinsey (4-1, fourth at 165); Landon Jones (3-2, fifth at 106); and Asa Doyle-Naegeli (fifth at 190).

James Wood's top-six finishers were Hayden Black (4-1, second at 106, lost to Skyline's Jacob Buffum 5-1 for the championship); Max Mooney (4-1, second at 120, lost to Skyline's Parker Withers 8-0 for the championship); James Battulga (4-1, second at 150, pinned by Brentsville's Billy Tyler in 1:36 for the championship); Aiden Henry (4-1, second at 157, pinned by Warren County's Elijah Frame in 2:30 for the championship); Seth Merryman (3-2, fifth at 132); and Sean Hodel (3-2, fifth at 144).

For Handley, Thorpe won his first two matches by fall and his last three by decision. Thompson went 4-1. Other top-six finishers were Alex Sardelis (3-2, third at 106) and Marvin Rivera (sixth at 285).
