Wrestling - Northwestern District Tournament

WARRENTON — Anthony Lucchiani (138 pounds) won his weight class to lead the Sherando High School wrestling team to a second-place finish at the Northwestern District tournament at Fauquier High School on Saturday.

The Warriors finished with 220.5 points in the 12-team tournament, 130 fewer points than first-place Skyline, which scored 350.5 points and had seven wrestlers win their weight classes. James Wood scored 188.5 points to finish third, Millbrook finished fifth with 162 points and Handley took sixth with 146 points.

Wrestlers were divided into pools for the opening round of competition. Wrestlers then finished the tournament with one or two placement matches based on how high they finished in the opening round of pool competition.

Lucchiani went 5-0 and won by fall in each of his matches. He defeated Brentsville’s Mark Griggs in the first-place match, pinning him in 1:30.

Other top-six finishers for the Warriors were Blake Kelly (3-2, fourth at 106); Damien Costello (4-1, second at 120); Lucas Butler (4-1, fourth at 126); Arya Rawat (sixth at 132); Conner Orth (sixth at 150); Braeden Estep (sixth at 165); Ben Taylor (3-2, third at 175); Jason Foster (4-1, second at 190); Judson Dean (4-1, second at 215); Jarrett See (sixth at 285); Kaden Hurst (4-1, third at 285).

Wrestlers for Wood who placed in the top six were Hayden Black (4-1, second at 106, lost by decision to Skyline’s Paden Alyea for the championship); Kaiden Tidwell (sixth at 113); Isaiah Hodel (3-2, fifth at 120); Cash Keeler (sixth at 126); Seth Merryman (3-2, fifth at 132); Hayden Franks (3-2, fifth at 138); Austin Noble (3-2, fifth at 144); Sean Hodel (3-2, third at 150); Jesse Woodson (3-2, third at 157); Aiden Henry (4-1, third at 165); Blake Tidwell (4-1, fourth at 175); Orion Cox (sixth at 215).

Millbrook’s William Potter (190) went 5-0 and won his weight class. He defeated Meridian’s Thomas Byrum by technical fall in the championship match. Ezra Doyle-Naegeli (285) finished 4-1 and also won his weight class, pinning Fauquier’s Brian Bland (1:49) in the championship bout.

The Pioneers’ other top-six finishers were Kenny Spaulding (3-2, third at 120); Bryan Gomez (4-1, fourth at 132); Gavin Hensley (3-2, fifth at 157); Lane Williams (3-2 fourth at 165); Asa Doyle-Naegeli (sixth at 175); Felipe Gesswein (3-2, fifth at 285).

Handley’s top-six wrestlers were Alex Sardelis (3-2, fourth at 113); Oscar Agustin-Santiago (sixth at 120); Jace Culotta (4-1, second at 126, pinned by Skyline’s Parker Withers for championship); Hayden Thompson (4-1, second at 144, lost to Skyline’s Josiah Sykes by decision for championship); Carson Otto (3-2, fifth at 150); James Battulga (4-1, second at 157, lost by decision to Skyline’s Josiah Sykes for championship); Thomas Thorpe (4-1, second at 175, lost by technical fall to Skyline’s Joey DiVello for championship).
